Easy to miss on maps and neglected by Western audiences, the Republic of Moldova, the second-poorest nation on the continent by GDP per capita is landlocked and bordered by Ukraine and Romania, sandwiched between Russia’s sphere of influence and that of the West, the European Union and NATO. From its founding, this geographical predicament has informed its history, its politics as well as the cultural and ethnic heritage of its two and a half million inhabitants. As the battlefield of opposing values, the country will continue to feel the effects of growing insecurity around the Black Sea and in the wider eastern European region.
