The purpose of this report is to provide an introduction into the history, geography and economy of the Baltic States, in addition to summarising some of the key areas of impact resulting from the war in Ukraine, with an added focus on Estonia. In doing so, it will consider the transition to a market economy of these states since the fall of communism in 1991 up until today. The report will also introduce the European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, an agreement between the Member States of the EU and the European Commission to strengthen cooperation between the countries bordering the Baltic Sea in order to face the common challenges and to benefit from shared opportunities within reach of the region.
