Rwanda is no stranger to conflict. Its history is one of pain, loss, and violence. However, despite this awful history, Rwanda has since become a business hub of Africa and now aims to reach Middle Income Country status by 2035.
In this report, we will be looking at the economic and social development of the country and the factors that have contributed to this development. We will be addressing Vision 2020 and the effects of the 1994 genocide on society, politics and the economy and the steps the country has implemented to reach its current standing despite the damages and consequences of the genocide.
“Rwanda is situated in central Africa and is most known for its history of serious conflict and ethnic divisions. The society was historically split into Hutu, Tutsi and Twa ethnic groups. When the Hutu ethnic group overthrew the Tutsi monarchy in 1959, many Tutsis fled to neighbouring countries, including Uganda. It was here that a rebel group, known as the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) was formed and in 1990 they invaded Rwanda to regain control. The fighting continued until 1993 when a peace agreement was signed in Tanzania.…”
