Mauritius is just over 1,100 kilometers east of Madagascar. Port Louis is the capital city and the only official port of entry and exit for sea vessels in Mauritius. 
Mauritius is ranked high in terms of economic competitiveness and currently placed 21st in the 2017 Index of Economic Freedom. In 2016, Mauritius exported goods to the value of $2.2 billion, mainly to France ($325.4 million), the UK ($263.7 million) and the US ($249.8 million), and imported $4.7 billion predominantly from China ($824.5 million), India ($768 million) and France ($365.1 million).
The top exports for Mauritius are: clothing ($662.8 million), meat and seafood preparations ($263 million) and sugar ($237.5 million); the top imports are: mineral fuels and oils ($637.8 million), electronic equipment ($422 million) and machinery ($369.6 million).
